Patchouli can evoke damp soil, dark leaves, dry wood, and a cool camphoraceous edge. Refining and dosage can make it earthy and deep or transparent and modern. Dosage and neighboring materials can change its sweetness, dryness, temperature, and diffusion.

Use in Perfumery

It places shadow and persistence beneath flowers, gives cedar more depth, and enriches the softness of musk. In small amounts it can suggest a smooth leather-like texture. Its movement through the opening, heart, and drydown often matters more than the name alone.
