Irrévérent

Bergamot and lavender open clean and bright, then elemi resin, coffee and oud pull the scent into a bitter, smoky depth. Patchouli, sandalwood and amber settle slowly on skin: a spicy woody composition with a deliberate streak of insolence.

The name Irrévérent comes from the Latin irreverens: rejecting conventions. The house presents the fragrance as a dictionary entry, with three definitions — disrespecting norms, outside of established rules, displaying insolence — each matched to a layer of the pyramid.

Bergamot and lavender arrive first, clean and bright. Elemi resin follows close behind, adding a faint bitterness and a sticky weight to the citrus. The lavender is not the soapy, neatly pressed kind; it carries both the green of the herb and the heaviness of resin.

After a while, the burnt bitterness of coffee and the dry wood of oud move to the center. Styrax balsam fills the gap between them, contributing both sweetness and smoke. What began clean turns dark and dense.

The drydown leaves patchouli's earthiness, the creamy wood of sandalwood, and the warmth of amber. The lightness of bergamot and lavender contrasts with the weight of oud and styrax. That contrast gives the title its provocative counterpart in scent. An evening setting seems fitting for following the interplay of resin and wood.
