Oud is a dense agarwood note associated with smoke, resin, leather, earth, animalic depth, and sweet dark wood. Depending on origin and style, it can also feel medicinal, balsamic, damp, fermented, or polished. The note is powerful because it combines beauty and roughness in the same breath.

Use in Perfumery

Perfumers use oud as a base note in amber, rose, leather, spicy, woody, vanilla, and oriental-leaning compositions. It pairs especially well with rose, saffron, patchouli, sandalwood, labdanum, incense, and musks. A small oud accent can make a perfume feel darker, more luxurious, and more mysterious; a heavier dose can define the whole structure.

That wide range is why oud can feel elegant to one wearer and challenging to another, especially when darker animalic facets are emphasized. Natural oud forms when Aquilaria wood becomes resin-rich after stress or infection, which helps explain its rarity and high cost.
