Catharsis

Catharsis draws on images of alchemy, lost languages and old books of secret rites. Luca Maffei brings spices, flowers, woods and leather together to suggest the depth of aged wood. The imagery gives the composition a sense of mystery, while the materials provide its character.

Clove and nutmeg begin with a dry spicy bite, softened slightly by neroli. In the heart, saffron and whisky join an accord of ylang ylang and rose. The warmth of spice and spirits gives the sweetness of the flowers a quieter, darker shading.

Oud, guaiac wood, cedarwood and a leather accord form the base. Dry woods with a smoky character meet the strength of leather, supporting the flowers and spices. It is a composition in which the sharpness of spice can be enjoyed alongside the rounder character of flowers and whisky. Flower, spice and wood each keep a place in the overall balance.
