Scent Development and Character
Oud Ulya unfolds as a concentrated, animalic portrait of Assam oud wrapped in smoke and tar, then slowly soothed by vanilla. The opening is dense and dark: raw oud with feral warmth, ink‑black woods, and a thick veil of birch tar that smells like charred leather and smoldering resin. As it settles, the tarry harshness softens and the vanilla rises, not as a sugary dessert but as a warm, balsamic cream that rounds the edges of the oud without diluting its wild character. The drydown feels like a shadowy, woody‑oriental aura, close to the skin yet imposing in personality, with a lingering impression of smoked leather, dark woods, and a subtle animalic hum.
Who It Is For and When to Wear It
Oud Ulya behaves like a true attar: a tiny dab on the pulse points develops slowly, radiating a compact yet steady aura for many hours. Its smoky, animalic oud and tar profile suits evening wear, contemplative moments, and cool to cold weather, where the warmth of vanilla and the density of the oil feel enveloping rather than overwhelming. It is best kept to intimate settings or environments that welcome experimental, dark oud‑based perfumery, and works well layered over simple woody or amber bases for added depth. Oud Ulya’s dense oud, smoke, and warm vanilla make it most suited to cool and cold seasons, especially autumn and winter, where its depth and warmth feel comforting rather than overwhelming. Spring can work in cooler climates or evening settings, while summer is generally less ideal except in very small doses at night. Sillage is Despite its concentration, the attar structure keeps the sillage moderate: it forms a dense but relatively close aura around the wearer, projecting within an arm’s length rather than filling a room, though the dark oud and smoke can feel intense at close range. Longevity is As a 100% oil attar, Oud Ulya shows very strong longevity: a single drop on skin can remain noticeable for 10–14 hours or more, with traces into the next day on fabric or hair when applied lightly. These are editorial estimates derived from the official composition and concentration and will vary with skin and climate.
Perfumer and Bottle
Released in 2021, this is presented as Attar (100% perfume oil) and credited to Cécile Zarokian. Oud Ulya is presented in Amouage’s modern Attar bottle: a compact, cylindrical clear flacon filled with dark oil, topped by a rounded metallic cap. A built‑in glass dabber allows precise application of a single drop to the pulse points, emphasizing the ritualistic, intimate character of the perfume oil.
