Rule of 72

Saffron and geranium in muted tones over natural Thai oud and creamy guaiac wood, a composition that conveys quiet resolve rather than loud strength.

Rule of 72 takes its name from the mathematical formula of the same name, and 27 87 says the sharpness of that formula guided the composition. The numeric name might suggest something cold and calculated, but the scent draws its outline with dry spice and the density of wood.

The top brings together cypress, saffron, cardamom and geranium. The green, dry air of conifer and the cool bite of cardamom meet saffron's muted warmth and the leafy, rose-like tone of geranium. The opening is colourful but held back, as if the brightness had been turned down a notch.

At the heart is oud, which the brand specifies as natural Thai oud. Around it sit the soft, creamy roundness of guaiac wood, the dry grain of cedarwood and the languid floral sweetness of ylang-ylang, so that the vigour of the oud is received by smooth wood and flower rather than left to stand alone.

The base of vetiver, patchouli and leather settles everything into a lower, steadier register: earthy root and leaf alongside a tanned, hide-like texture. The scent is designed to convey confidence in a whisper rather than announce it.

It is an eau de parfum made in Barcelona, offered in 27ml and 87ml. Although oud and leather form its spine, it does not parade its weight; it is one to try in small amounts on days when you want spice and wood worn with composure.
