ma/jo
An oriental, sensual trio of cardamom, ylang-ylang and patchouli, named from uka's MA plus JOY wordplay.
Perfumer: Gilles Berthoumieux
Ylang-ylang is the centre of ma/jo, chosen for the contrast between a delicate-looking flower and its dense, sensual scent. Dry cardamom opens the composition, followed by the fuller floral character, with patchouli lending earthy depth beneath the sweetness. The name is uka's wordplay, connecting MA with the JO of JOY across a slash; its Japanese sound also suggests a witch, adding a mysterious association to the idea of personal pleasure. Floral richness, spice and shadow give the perfume a character intended for any gender. Gilles Berthoumieux composed it for uka's first fragrance range in 2022.
