About Gilles Berthoumieux

Gilles Berthoumieux is a French fragrance creator with a background in botanical materials and the founder of Sirius in the Tarn region of southwestern France. His long product-development partnership with Japan's uka extends from nail oils to perfume.

Career

An agricultural engineer specializing in tropical agronomy, he began by helping manage around a dozen essential-oil distilleries in Madagascar and the Comoros. After returning to France in the early 1990s, he supplied materials to Sanoflore and Pierre Franchomme and contributed to early organic certification charters for essential oils. He founded Sirius in 1994, bringing his experience of producers and distillation into the business.

Creative Style & Philosophy

Alongside the quality of an essential oil, he values being able to trace where and how it was produced. In his work with uka, botanical scents become part of stories about a time of day or a remembered landscape, giving familiar experiences a role in the way people encounter perfume.

Signature Works

  • *7:15* — lime and orange move into woods, evoking a quiet morning at a hot-spring inn.
  • *24:45* — lavender and vanilla meet spice in a composition imagining the end of a working day.
  • *Merry Rose* — bright citrus and full-bodied rose express the celebratory mood of Bulgaria's rose festival.
