Rum is a boozy note inspired by the sugarcane spirit and its associations with molasses, caramel, oak barrels, vanilla, and tropical warmth. In perfume, it is usually an accord rather than literal alcohol, built to suggest sweetness, fermentation, and ambered heat.

Scent Profile

The scent is warm, sweet, dark, caramelized, and slightly smoky. It can suggest brown sugar, toffee, dried fruit, oak, vanilla, and a small alcoholic sting. Compared with whisky, rum often feels rounder and sweeter; compared with cognac, it can feel more tropical and molasses-rich.

Use in Perfumery

Perfumers use rum in gourmand, amber, leather, tobacco, vanilla, woody, spicy, and tropical fruit compositions. It can give flowers a glossy night-time mood, make fruit feel more adult, or deepen vanilla and tonka with a boozy shadow. With patchouli, leather, or tobacco, rum becomes darker and more sensual.
