It is related in mood to myrrh but often feels rounder, sweeter, and more enveloping. The scent can suggest warm skin, polished resin, dark syrup, and a soft leathery shadow.

Use in Perfumery

Perfumers use opoponax in amber, balsamic, spicy, leather, incense, and gourmand-leaning bases. It blends naturally with labdanum, benzoin, vanilla, tonka, cinnamon, patchouli, sandalwood, and tobacco. In a formula, opoponax can smooth rough edges, extend warmth, and give sweetness a resinous rather than sugary character.

Its sweetness is especially useful when vanilla or tonka needs a darker, resinous frame rather than extra sugar, without flattening the surrounding floral or woody materials. Opoponax is sometimes called sweet myrrh, which helps explain its balance of sacred resin and approachable warmth. It does not always read as church-like incense. In many perfumes it feels closer to amber-colored honey, soft leather, and a glowing balsamic cushion, making it valuable for sensual drydowns with depth and comfort.
