About Serge de Oliveira
Serge de Oliveira is a French perfumer whose work is strongly grounded in natural materials. In a first-person interview, he describes reaching perfumery through accumulated practical roles rather than a conventional elite academic route.
Career
After technical studies in cosmetics and industrial pharmacy and a one-year ISIPCA program, he worked in fragrance development at L’Oréal and Dior, olfactory quality control at Chanel, and as an assistant perfumer at IFF. At Robertet, assistant work with materials and formulas led to appointment as a perfumer.
Creative Style & Philosophy
He considers daily smelling and hands-on formulation the best school. A constant search for novelty and originality is balanced by close attention to the complexity of naturals, with each composition carrying a part of his personality.
That material practice makes contrast especially important in his work. Incense can feel transparent, marine effects can remain dry, and woods can carry warmth without heaviness, because repeated smelling and adjustment determine the balance rather than a fixed stylistic formula.
