A Family Album in Scent

Sisley is a French family company founded in 1976 by Hubert d'Ornano and his wife, Isabelle. Though best known for skincare, it has treated fragrance as a core craft since its earliest years, and most of its perfumes are developed and made in France.

From Jean d'Albret to Sisley

In 1946, Hubert and his brother Michel, both in their early twenties, set up a small perfume company called Jean d'Albret. In 1953 they joined their parents, Guillaume and Elisabeth, to build the skincare brand Orlane, which they sold in the late 1960s. Hubert then started over with Isabelle, convinced that natural ingredients held the most promise. Their children Philippe and Christine and their granddaughter Daria later took up roles in the company, carrying the family business into another generation.

Gardens Remembered

Sisley's perfumes often begin with a particular place in the family's memory, usually a garden. Eau du Soir traces back to Isabelle's childhood walks through the Alcázar gardens in Seville, where seringa (mock orange) blossoms filled the air at dusk; Hubert conceived the perfume as a gift for his wife. Izia goes back to the rose gardens of the family castle at Łańcut in Poland, which Isabelle wanted to recreate at the family home in central France.

Signature Perfumes

  • Eau de Campagne: the house's first signature scent, from its founding years; tomato leaf and herbs evoke the green scent of the countryside.
  • Eau du Soir: a chypre born as a husband's gift, drawn from a memory of Seville at nightfall.
  • Izia: a rose fragrance rooted in a Polish rose garden that Isabelle hoped to see bloom again in France.
