About Andrea Maack

Andrea Maack is an Icelandic fragrance house created by visual artist Andrea Maack. It began with scent introduced into her gallery installations in Reykjavík, where fragrance formed part of an artwork rather than a conventional product launch.

History

The project grew from an extension of one artist's vision. Maack had not initially intended to establish a perfume brand: a concept fragrance made for an exhibition gradually developed into a wider collection. That passage from an installation to something a person could wear continues to inform a practice that moves between fine art and perfumery.

Philosophy & Signature Style

The house draws on Maack's connection to her native Iceland and presents fragrance as something to feel as well as to wear. Its collection is gender-neutral, and the brand encourages people to experience the compositions on their own skin over time. The official account describes perfume oils blended with organic Icelandic alcohol and water. Memory, personal interpretation and the relationship between an artwork and its viewer are part of that approach, carried into the experience of wearing a scent.

Bottle Design

Milan-based architect Maddalena Casadei designed the custom bottle, drawing on sculptural forms in nature, black obsidian found in the Icelandic highlands, and Maack's artwork. Its dark appearance and clean lines were conceived to sit comfortably in the hand. Bormioli Luigi in Parma, Italy, produces the bottle, giving physical form to a collection that began with a visual artist's ideas.
