Career

Jean-Claude Ellena is a French perfumer born in Grasse in 1947. He entered the fragrance-material world at a young age and later trained through the Givaudan perfumery school. He created work for several international houses before serving as the in-house perfumer of Hermès from 2004 to 2016. During that period he developed a transparent modern language that translated travel, gardens, materials, and air into concise compositions.

Ellena is associated with transparency, restraint, and disciplined material selection. Rather than building density through accumulation, he leaves air between carefully placed elements, producing effects often compared with watercolor, chamber music, or concise literature. He tends to translate light, wind, distance, and memory instead of reproducing a place literally.
