Caswell-Massey

Founded as an apothecary in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1752, Caswell-Massey connects historic American fragrances with the everyday rituals of bathing and grooming.

About Caswell-Massey

Caswell-Massey is an American fragrance and body-care house founded in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1752. Its origins as an apothecary help explain a range that extends beyond perfume to soaps, shaving products and other objects used in everyday grooming.

History

Scottish physician William Hunter established the business in the port city of Newport, selling medical preparations alongside scented products. Number Six appeared in 1772 and became one of its enduring fragrances. Successive owners carried the business forward, while its New York store developed a bespoke practice that began with conversations about a customer's tastes, habits and daily life. These personal commissions became part of the house's fragrance archive.

Philosophy and Character

Historic formulas remain a starting point for new products, connecting familiar fragrances with contemporary approaches to making scent. The floral collection developed with the New York Botanical Garden uses fragrance capture technology rather than crushing flowers to obtain their oils. Across perfume, bathing and shaving, the emphasis is on useful scented objects that can become part of a routine. Its breadth reflects the apothecary tradition as much as the history of American perfumery.

Notable Fragrances

Number Six and Jockey Club, introduced in 1840, are two longstanding names in the collection. More recently, Seaboard Matcha brings matcha and fig into a fresh green composition, adding a contemporary expression alongside those inherited fragrances.
