Mathieu Nardin is a French perfumer who treats Grasse material culture and contemporary fragrance technology as parts of the same creative language. Rather than copy the smell of an object, he separates the feeling it produced in him and gives that feeling an abstract structure others can enter.

Career

Raised in Grasse within a family of perfumers, Nardin encountered raw materials and laboratories early. He trained at Robertet and began his professional career as a perfumer in 2009 at the age of twenty-three. International experience in the United States preceded a move to MANE, where he continues to work across natural sourcing, new molecules, and extraction technology.

Creative Style & Philosophy

Traditional technique and experimentation with new materials are not opposites in his practice. Even a familiar plant can be reconsidered through origin and use, revealing a facet not yet placed at the center. By moving among several projects, he avoids over-attachment to one solution and chooses the structure that leaves the emotional core most legible.
