About Lalique

Lalique is a French house spanning jewellery, glass, crystal, decorative arts, and fragrance. In its perfume work, the scent and its vessel are treated as parts of the same object, continuing a design history in which glass gives visible form to an otherwise invisible material.

History

René Lalique opened his own Paris workshop in 1885 and became a defining jeweller of Art Nouveau before turning increasingly toward glass. His 1907 collaboration with perfumer François Coty changed perfume presentation by pairing expressive bottles with production methods that made them available beyond one-off commissions. The house’s relationship with scent became direct in 1992, when his granddaughter Marie-Claude Lalique launched the first eponymous fragrance, Lalique de Lalique. This connected decades of bottle design with a fragrance collection issued under the Lalique name.

Philosophy & Signature Style

Light, nature, and the tactile possibilities of glass remain central to Lalique. Plants, animals, and female figures that appeared in René Lalique’s decorative work return as relief, color, weight, and silhouette in perfume bottles. The fragrances themselves are broader than the ornate packaging might suggest: the range moves from translucent florals and fruit to dry woods, resin, and dark vetiver. A successful Lalique perfume therefore works in two registers, offering a bottle with a specific visual reference and a composition intended to live beyond the display shelf.

Iconic Fragrances

Lalique de Lalique marks the house’s 1992 entry into fragrance under its own name. Encre Noire places cypress and two expressions of vetiver in a black bottle inspired by René Lalique’s 1913 Biches inkwell, making it a modern emblem of the collection. Amethyst draws on the artist’s blackberry motif, linking dark fruit and floral facets to a recognizably Lalique surface design.
