Marie Salamagne is a Paris-born Master Perfumer at dsm-firmenich. She approaches ingredients as a painter might approach color, building fragrance through contrasts of light, shadow, texture, and tone.

Career

Raised in a family of doctors, Salamagne first pursued medicine before turning to chemistry. Discovering ISIPCA redirected her toward perfumery. She began her career at a fragrance house in Grasse, where she worked closely with natural raw materials, and joined the company now known as dsm-firmenich in 2001. There she trained with senior figures including Olivier Cresp; in 2026 she was appointed Master Perfumer.

Creative Style & Philosophy

Salamagne compares a successful fragrance to Proust's madeleine: it should transport the wearer and release an emotion that cannot be fully controlled. She keeps separate notebooks for materials, openings, bases, and the overall composition. That method supports a painterly practice in which contrasting colors and textures are arranged until they create both harmony and a distinct emotional trace.
