About Abel
Abel makes contemporary perfumes with natural-origin ingredients, drawing on plants as well as materials produced through biotechnology using yeast and fungi. Its work explores how a fragrance made without petrochemical ingredients can offer a broad and distinctive range of sensory experiences.
History
Founder Frances Shoemack came to perfumery from winemaking. A search for the kind of natural perfume she wanted to wear led her to develop her own, collaborating with perfumers and specialists in raw materials. Master perfumer Isaac Sinclair and Dr. Fanny Grau, whose background includes chemistry and fragrance research, have become central collaborators in the project.
Philosophy & Signature Style
Under its Radical Fragrance approach, Abel brings ingredient transparency and the environmental impact of production into the perfume-making process. Its natural palette extends beyond essential oils to include materials obtained through fermentation and other biotechnological processes, alongside upcycled ingredients. Developments in the palette open further possibilities for the perfumers, while the complete ingredient information offers a closer view of what goes into each fragrance.
Iconic Fragrances
Cyan Nori explores a salty-sweet aquatic character, while Laundry Day takes a bright, sun-filled citrus direction. The Apartment places richer floral and fruit impressions within a gourmand composition. The contrast between these perfumes shows the different textures and moods the house develops from its shared commitment to natural-origin materials.
