About Tatsushi Horita
Tatsushi Horita is a Japanese perfumer with experience in fragrance companies and cosmetic research. At Nippon Kodo, he develops scents for different kinds of products. Trees, plants, photographs and the atmosphere of a place provide starting points for his work, supported by decades of practical knowledge and continuing curiosity about raw materials.
Career
He entered a major fragrance company in 1975 and trained in France, Germany and the United States during 1981 and 1982. After moving to the Japanese branch of an international manufacturer in 1994, he joined Shiseido’s fragrance research laboratory in 1998, serving in leadership and chief perfumer roles. He moved to Nippon Kodo in 2017. His professional affiliations include the French Society of Perfumers.
Creative Style and Philosophy
Horita translates a visual brief into words before choosing ingredients. Morning mist, clarity or a sacred space can guide a formula toward particular herbs, flowers and woods. He also considers how cultural experience changes the meaning of a material: hinoki can suggest Japanese ritual architecture, while frankincense offers another familiar route toward solemnity. Trial blends and repeated adjustments turn those associations into a coherent fragrance.
Signature Works
- *Hinoki Eau de Parfum* — A KITOWA composition connecting Japanese wood with iris and sandalwood.
- *Sunrise* — Yohaku’s morning fragrance, using Japanese mint and citrus with the softness of mimosa.
- *Monk Tree* — A Yohaku composition in which frankincense, hinoki and woods suggest calm and a sacred setting.
