Céline Ellena is a French perfumer born into a Grasse fragrance family. Her grandfather, father Jean-Claude Ellena, and an uncle all worked in perfumery, so smelling flowers, earth, food, and household materials formed part of daily life from childhood. She observes words, ordinary gestures, and smells encountered in the street, translating small emotional movements into olfactory stories.

Career

Ellena first pursued literature-related studies in psychology and linguistics before choosing professional perfumery and graduating from ISIPCA. She gained experience with several international fragrance companies, including work at Charabot in Grasse, before becoming independent. She later spent a substantial period creating for a Parisian perfume house and continued with projects for other established and independent maisons. Alongside composition, she gives talks and writes about smell, treating language as an active part of her practice rather than a separate activity.

Creative Style and Philosophy

Her work connects fragrance and language through emotion. Familiar smells and memories become structures that balance delicacy with surprise; even a playful subject can reveal a complex, intimate development on skin. She often begins by listening closely to people and the feelings behind a project, then allows those impressions to form a story before writing a formula. Materials need not be rare to interest her: their arrangement, tension, and emotional timing create the distinction. A comic or familiar premise can therefore become poised, warm, and wearable rather than merely literal.
