About Andy Tauer

Andy Tauer is a Swiss perfumer who taught himself the craft and works from Zurich. Through his own house, Tauer Perfumes, he creates compositions and takes part in their hands-on production, keeping a direct connection between the imagined fragrance and the finished perfume.

Career

With a doctorate in chemistry and experience in molecular biology and consultancy, Tauer came to perfumery after reading Mandy Aftel's book *Essence and Alchemy*. He began experimenting with natural materials and later added synthetics to his palette. A friend's proposal to create a scent for his Zurich bookshop led to the first perfume in the line, Le Maroc Pour Elle; Tauer founded the house in 2005 and continued other work for several years as the business developed.

Creative Style & Philosophy

He values the complexity and depth of natural ingredients while using synthetics to refine a composition and introduce additional effects. Although trained as a chemist, he does not regard chemistry itself as the source of his creativity, drawing instead on imagined landscapes and memories. His description of perfume as a fragrant sculpture gives the wearer an active part: the object he shapes from scented materials finds its final form on a person.

Signature Works

  • *L'Air du Désert Marocain*: coriander, cumin, dry woods and amber warmth suggest the atmosphere of a Moroccan desert night.
  • *Lonestar Memories*: an aromatic opening leads into smoky leather, supported by woods and balsamic resins.
