Sequoia is a woody note inspired by the giant evergreen conifer Sequoia sempervirens, native to North America. In perfumery, essential oil from the actual sequoia tree is not commonly used; instead, the note is typically recreated using a blend of other woody materials (such as cedarwood, vetiver, sandalwood) and synthetic aromachemicals to evoke the deep woodiness, subtle smokiness, earthy nuances, and forest calm associated with sequoia.

Scent Profile

The scent of sequoia is characterized by dry wood, resin, and a hint of earth, conveying both tranquility and strength. At the top, there may be a slight sharpness of green or coniferous notes, but over time it softens into a warm, woody aroma. Smoky or leathery facets can add complexity and depth.

Use in Perfumery

Sequoia note is primarily used as a base or middle note, providing depth and longevity to a fragrance. It is employed in both men's and women's perfumes, often in woody oriental, chypre, and fougère compositions, and pairs well with other woody notes, amber, musk, and spices. While rarely the star of a fragrance, it adds a natural, calming forest atmosphere to the overall scent.
