Grès is a perfume house rooted in the couture of Madame Grès, who draped cloth on the body with the concentration of a sculptor rather than cutting it into conventional decoration. Flowing line and an uncompromising character coexist, and fragrance likewise places dryness or tension inside elegance.
History
Germaine Émilie Krebs worked under the name Alix before founding Grès in Paris in 1942. The house introduced its first fragrance in 1947, and a bold late-1950s release became the lasting foundation of the perfume business. From the 1980s onward, couture and fragrance followed different ownership paths. Parfums Grès is now based in Switzerland, where the archive and newer releases are managed separately from the original fashion house.
Philosophy & Signature Style
The classical-looking drapery was not an excess of ornament but a technique for reading the weight of fabric and the line of a body. In scent, flowers, leather, moss, woods, and spice are not always polished into complete softness; willpower and an animal shadow remain visible. Even after the operating businesses separated, the most useful inheritance is this simultaneous presence of softness and strength.
