About Sophia Grojsman

Sophia Grojsman is a Belarus-born perfumer whose nearly fifty-year career at IFF transformed modern floral fragrance. Her love of rose and her bold reversal of classical proportions gave base materials a new presence from the opening, influencing generations of perfumers after her.

Career

After studying analytical inorganic chemistry in Poland, Grojsman emigrated to the United States in 1965 and joined IFF as a laboratory technician in 1966. Ernest Shiftan, Josephine Catapano, and other leading perfumers helped turn her scientific training into the art of composition. She created more than thirty bestselling fine fragrances and received The Fragrance Foundation’s Perfumer of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.

Creative Style & Philosophy

Grojsman pioneered the overdose: using a material normally confined to the base in such abundance that it becomes visible from the top of the structure. Classical rose, violet, peach, and floral accords therefore acquire unusual volume, silkiness, and confidence without losing emotional warmth. *Trésor* and *Paris* show how this technique enlarged the scale of feminine fragrance, while *Outrageous!* carries her instinct for colour and generosity into a bright contemporary register.
