Spellbound was introduced in 1991 to capture the intense magic of falling in love. Estée Lauder describes its inspiration as amber, a way of conveying passion, sensuality and the essence of femininity, and classes the scent as a floral amber.

The top pairs rose and muguet with the ripe fruit of apricot. In the middle, bright orange blossom meets the spice of carnation and the cool lift of cardamom, so the flowers gain a spicier, more magnetic edge.

The base settles into smooth sandalwood, with vanilla adding sweetness and amber adding warmth. Read from top to base, the composition moves from flower and fruit, through spice, to a sweet and warm foundation.

Evelyn Lauder said that with so many difficulties confronting people every day, romance and fantasy become a new priority and everyone wants to fall in love again; Spellbound, she said, opens the doors. The bottle has since been redesigned, while the fragrance itself is presented as unchanged.
