Céline Barel is a French IFF perfumer who understands scent as an intimate space between people. The seasonal odors of working distilleries in Grasse and encounters with other cultures, including Morocco, support her narrative approach.
Career
First attracted to fragrance advertising and brand expression, Barel studied marketing and international management at business school. Internships with brands and at MANE redirected her toward composition itself. She studied materials while working at IFF Italy, then passed an internal selection for roughly five years of perfumery training across the Netherlands, New York, Paris, and Grasse, with Pierre Wargny as a mentor.
Creative Style & Philosophy
She compares the perfumer to a novelist, rebuilding people, places, and events as journeys with olfactory color, shape, and texture. Harmony is not sealed into perfection; a difficult material or slight irregularity leaves tension in the story. Full florals and ambers are modernized by controlling air and distance from skin rather than relying on volume alone.
