Carlos Benaim joins memories of medicinal herbs, tobacco, markets, and orange blossom from Tangier with chemical training and the lucid structures required by large-scale fine fragrance. His work reaches broad audiences with strong memorability while retaining the origin of materials and a personal sensory judgment.

Career

Benaim encountered plants and essential oils through the work of his pharmacist father. He studied chemistry in Toulouse, gained experience in Grasse, and joined IFF in 1967. Training under Bernard Chant and Ernest Shiftan led to a career of more than half a century based in New York. He received IFF's Master Perfumer title and the Fragrance Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.

Creative Style & Philosophy

The complexity of a natural material is organized so that the opening impression, central signature, and drydown structure remain legible rather than clouded. Orange blossom and heated florals, patchouli, moss, woods, and herbs can be placed boldly, creating memory from a few strong contrasts. Collaboration does not average different voices into one; technique and sensibility are assigned useful roles, allowing authorial decisions to survive even at major commercial scale.
