About Black Cardamom

Black cardamom is a Himalayan spice obtained from the fruits of Amomum subulatum, a member of the ginger family grown in countries including Nepal. Its dried pods provide a botanical material for aromatic extracts, as well as a distinctive character that can be interpreted in perfumery.

Scent Profile

**Smoky, woody depth contrasts with a fresher aromatic edge**, making the spice feel both warming and more open. Compared with the brighter delicacy of green cardamom, it often suggests drier wood and a darker, earthier texture. Drying affects this character: traditional exposure to wood smoke can give the pods a more pronounced smoky impression, while different processing methods produce a different balance.

Use in Perfumery

Black cardamom can add dry spice to creamy sandalwood or introduce an aromatic dimension around resins, leather and darker woods. Its fresher aspect offers a useful contrast to smoke, keeping a warmer composition from relying on depth alone. An oil, an absolute and a perfumer’s interpretation need not have identical proportions of these facets; the material’s preparation and its surrounding ingredients affect how much smoke, wood and brightness come forward.
