Burberry began by asking how people could move freely through British weather, and it has continued to join function with beauty as a luxury house. History

Thomas Burberry opened his shop in Basingstoke in 1856 at the age of twenty-one. In 1879 he developed gabardine, a breathable, weather-resistant fabric whose use by explorers and in military clothing helped establish the technical foundation for the house's later outerwear and trench coats. As the business expanded into fashion, accessories, and beauty, invention in response to climate and the continuing reinterpretation of British culture remained central.

Philosophy & Signature Style

Heritage is not kept as a fixed costume; it is adjusted to contemporary materials, bodies, and culture. Just as the check, Equestrian Knight, and trench construction are repeatedly reworked, familiar memories of landscape, weather, and food in fragrance receive urban contours and an unexpected texture.
