Flash Back in New York
New York as fire under ice: spices, violet and leather drifting into smoky woods.
Perfumer: Jérôme Epinette
New York stops for nothing, not even its fiercest blizzards. Jérôme Epinette's Flash Back in New York was composed as a tribute to that city. The photograph is by Vivienne Gucwa, who has long made New York her subject.
The scent likens New York to fire under ice and seeks a composition fitting its excess and astonishing possibilities. It opens with cumin, saffron and clary sage: warm-smelling spice colliding with dry, bitter herbs, while a white linen accord slips in the pallor of freshly washed cloth. Cold and heat share the stage from the start.
To the beat of violet and jasmine, leathery notes lend warmth; then the pace slows into a smoky woody layer of birch smoke, papyrus and vetiver.
