Hypnorange

Hypnorange places the brightness of orange beside tobacco smoke and the sweetness of resins. Inspired by audacity and contrasts of light and shadow, Luca Maffei carries citrus freshness into a creamier, warmer setting. Orange remains the subject, but its character changes as fruit, flower and darker materials meet.

Sweet orange, bitter orange and grapefruit open the composition. Juicy sweetness, bitter peel and tartness overlap, while coconut rounds their edges. At the centre, soft orange blossom meets the dry, smoky character of tobacco. The movement from citrus fruit to the flower of the orange tree gives a familiar theme a different texture.

Vanilla, benzoin, black amber and musk provide a sweet, warm finish around the citrus and tobacco. Rather than ending with the briskness of fruit juice, the composition allows creamy sweetness and a suggestion of smoke to remain part of its orange character.
