About Mark Buxton

Mark Buxton is a British-born, German-raised perfumer based in Paris. He entered the world of perfumery by chance when, at age 21, he appeared on a German TV show and successfully identified perfumes in a blind test. Impressed, Haarmann & Reimer (now Symrise) offered him a place in their perfumery school. Since then, he has become one of the most respected and innovative noses in the industry.

Career

Buxton began his career at Haarmann & Reimer, where he trained and later worked as a perfumer. He then moved to Luzi as an independent consultant. Over the years, he has created fragrances for prestigious houses such as Givenchy, Versace, Van Cleef & Arpels, Paco Rabanne, Burberry, Cartier, and Chopard. His collaboration with Comme des Garçons in the 1990s, including the iconic original fragrance and Comme des Garçons 2, established him as a pioneer of avant-garde perfumery.

Buxton's creative style is characterized by simplicity and innovation. He believes that "simplicity is the ultimate luxury," and his compositions often feature short ingredient lists and transparent, woody accords. He is known for his unconventional approach, blending unexpected notes to create fragrances that are both wearable and avant-garde. Signature Works

• *Comme des Garçons Eau de Parfum (1994)* — The house debut, driving clove, cinnamon, cardamom, and nutmeg into the resinous darkness of incense, labdanum, and cedar.
• *Comme des Garçons 2 (1999)* — An abstract paper-and-ink composition in which bright aldehydes and a black-ink accord meet magnolia, patchouli, cedar, and incense.
• *Comme des Garçons 2 Man (2004)* — A dry woody-spicy structure pairing incense and vetiver with saffron, nutmeg, leather, and mahogany to evoke smoke and polished timber.
