About Gian Luca Perris

Gian Luca Perris is a Rome-born perfumer and the founder and creative director of Perris Monte Carlo. His work connects journeys to the places where fragrant materials are produced with the international experience he gained in his family's perfume business.

Career

After studying economics and commerce, Perris joined his father's company at nineteen, learning the business through parcel deliveries, accounting and financial analysis. He later took responsibility for international markets, travelling to Scandinavia and the Middle East and discovering their different cultures and fragrant materials. At his own house he composes perfumes and also works with other perfumers, developing collections that bring several creative perspectives to the same interest in ingredients.

Creative Style & Philosophy

Perris places the beauty of a raw material at the centre of a perfume, respecting traditional extraction methods while exploring newer techniques that can reveal another facet of an ingredient. Travel gives him contact with growers and producers as well as the landscapes in which those materials originate. His compositions are conceived without a gender division, allowing flowers, citrus, woods and resins to retain their particular character within the finished fragrance.

Signature Works

  • *Vanille de Tahiti* — Uses extraction techniques and floral companions to express Tahitian vanilla.
  • *Vetiver Java* — Focuses on the woody, earthy and smoky shades of vetiver from Java.
