About David Chieze

David Chieze is a perfumer who looks to balance and contrast in nature as starting points for creation. A perfumer at LUZI, he has composed fragrances for houses including ELECTIMUSS and Thomas de Monaco. His approach connects smell with other sensations, considering colour, texture and memory alongside the character of individual raw materials.

Career

He discovered perfumery as a profession at around seventeen. While working in a L’Artisan Parfumeur shop, he met Bertrand Duchaufour and began practising reconstructions of accords such as lily of the valley and rose. Duchaufour later introduced him to Mark Buxton, with whom he continued his training. Working directly with materials and learning through those relationships became central to his development as a perfumer.

Creative Style & Philosophy

In his own account, creation involves finding equilibrium between opposing qualities. Osmanthus connects the fruitier and more animalic aspects of mango and oud, while woods and salt counterbalance more vivid citrus and fruit. He values rose for its many facets and also enjoys imagining beyond literal reconstruction, as in giving an imagined scent to a flower that has none. These contrasting subjects share a search for harmony rather than a single fixed formula.

Signature Works

  • *Astrum Nova — ELECTIMUSS*: Mango and oud connected through the contrasting facets of osmanthus.
  • *Amber Bloom — ELECTIMUSS*: Passionfruit and citrus counterbalanced by salt and woods.
  • *Jade Amour — Thomas de Monaco*: An imagined scent for the unscented jade vine.
