Bernard Chant was a French perfumer who helped shape twentieth-century American prestige fragrance. As head perfumer at IFF's New York studio, he made complex materials feel inevitable inside layered, wearable structures.
Career
Chant spent much of his career at IFF, leading a sizable creative team and developing formulas that often crossed the gender conventions of their period. He is remembered for testing on people rather than relying only on blotters, attending to body heat, emotional presence, and the way a fragrance works at close range as well as in projection.
Creative Style & Philosophy
His distinctive language joined patchouli, oakmoss, leather, herbs, florals, powder, and muted animalic effects in taut chypre architecture.
