About GARMENT
GARMENT is a Japanese fragrance brand established by total fashion creator Takeru Yamashita. Its idea is to express oneself through scent as freely as through clothes or accessories. Colours and the feel of fabrics became the starting points for its collection.
History
Yamashita grew up with a fragrance designer as his mother. He studied metalwork and jewellery design at Tama Art University, then fashion design at University of the Arts London. After returning to Japan, he introduced GARMENT in 2016, and the brand appeared at Isetan Salon de Parfum that year. A white-themed fragrance and a denim filter joined the collection in 2017.
Philosophy & Signature Style
Lens filters that change the appearance of a photograph provided the inspiration. The brand calls its method of layering another scent over a base “fragrance filtering,” changing texture and impression as though choosing a different fabric for an outfit. It values the colours and scenes that arise before a person knows a material’s name, leaving room for the wearer to interpret scent freely.
Iconic Fragrances
The colour-themed bases include White with its white-floral character, citrus-led Yellow and rose-centred Magenta. Four filters take their themes from denim, linen, frills and fur. They bring ideas of structure, coolness, softness and warmth from fabric and decoration into the way fragrance is worn, extending the collection’s relationship with clothing.
