Etat Libre d'Orange is a French perfume house founded in Paris by Etienne de Swardt in 2006. Its name refers to the former Orange Free State in South Africa, where de Swardt was born, while also functioning as a declaration of creative independence. From the beginning, the house invited established perfumers to work beyond familiar commercial conventions and presented fragrance as a cultural form in which title, narrative, material, and composition carry equal weight. That approach helped establish the brand as a prominent voice in contemporary independent perfumery.
