About Etat Libre d'Orange
History
Etat Libre d'Orange is a French perfume house founded in Paris by Etienne de Swardt in 2006. Its name refers to the former Orange Free State in South Africa, where de Swardt was born, while also functioning as a declaration of creative independence. From the beginning, the house invited established perfumers to work beyond familiar commercial conventions and presented fragrance as a cultural form in which title, narrative, material, and composition carry equal weight. That approach helped establish the brand as a prominent voice in contemporary independent perfumery.
Philosophy & Signature Style
Provocation and humor often provide the entrance to Etat Libre d'Orange, but the perfumes themselves are built through serious technical craft and carefully judged materials. The house draws on social taboos, literature, individual lives, memory, science, and ordinary emotion. Its compositions frequently place apparent opposites together: sweetness and unease, cleanliness and animalic warmth, classical structures and modern aroma molecules. A shared square bottle and circular cockade label give the collection visual continuity without reducing the individuality of each scent. The brand also resists rigid gender categories, allowing wearers to inhabit a story rather than follow a prescribed identity.
Iconic Fragrances
The early Sécrétions Magnifiques became a symbol of the house's willingness to address the body directly. Like This explores domestic warmth through spice and textured sweetness, while You or Someone Like You interprets urban greenery with a transparent, contemporary character. The Ghost in the Shell considers the boundary between human sensation and technology. In the Orange Extraordinaire collection, the house develops richer material density and more expansive storytelling, extending its experimental position through polished, long-form compositions rather than abandoning the irreverence that defined its beginning.
