About ÆTHER

ÆTHER is a French fragrance house founded in 2016 by Nicolas Chabot. It places synthetic materials at the centre of the scent, with each creation built around a single molecule or a family of molecules. The brand describes this approach as "poetic chemistry."

History

Chabot is also known for reviving Le Galion, a house founded in Paris in 1930 that had once disappeared. He started ÆTHER from a simple idea: if so many brands are built mainly on natural materials, there is room for more brands built mainly on synthetics. In 2024, Jules Dinand, grandson of the perfume bottle designer Pierre Dinand, designed a new bottle for the house. Dinand says he wanted an object that plays with the eye and with light, moving between shadow and clarity, opacity and transparency, so that each angle of view reveals a new image.

Philosophy

The name comes from the Ancient Greek aithēr, borrowed through classical Latin and meaning pure air: the subtlest, highest part of the atmosphere, and the "fifth element" alongside fire, air, water and earth. According to the brand, ÆTHER creates conceptual fragrances with fine synthetic molecules and natural ingredients to honour the underlying foundations of modern perfumery. Each creation can be worn on its own, layered with others in the series, or combined with a fragrance the wearer already owns.

Highlights

The materials play different roles from one perfume to the next. In FLORÆ, musks carry a soft floral accord. In SOLÆR, a lactone brings out the coconut-like warmth that ties the scent to summer.

  • FLORÆ: musks layered with iris and neroli.
  • SOLÆR: Methyl Laitone lends facets of coconut and fig.
  • SUGÆR: ethyl maltol evokes caramelised sugar with cocoa and vanilla alongside it.
