The Grudge
The long journey of beach-found ambergris, moving from wormwood bitterness to a warm, precious base.
Perfumer: Euan McCall
The Grudge is about ambergris, the 'white gold' that now and then washes up on Scottish beaches. It follows the whole journey: formed in a sperm whale, rolled by the tide, picked up from the sand and tinctured into perfume. The brand reads that slow alchemy of time and tide as a metaphor for being present.
Wormwood opens it bitter, with frankincense and copal resin adding dry resin smoke, before it settles into a herbal, saline heart. Tea, seaweed and calamus sit there together, recalling the shore as much as a quiet moment of reflection.
Ambergris, tobacco, oud, musk, oakmoss and labdanum absolute form the base, turning the early bitterness into something warm and precious.
