Sunken Tobacco
Tobacco leaves imagined after years in a sunken wooden box: cherry mead and spice up top, seaweed, ambergris and oakwood beneath.
Perfumer: Euan McCall
Sunken Tobacco began as a brief to perfumer Euan McCall: keep everything people love in tobacco, the sweetness, the honey, the earth and the herbs, and then give it BeauFort London's twist. The imagined object is a bundle of fermented leaves shut in a wooden box and left on the seabed for years, slowly taking on salt and whatever else time and tide can give. The scent is the moment someone finds that box and lifts the lid.
Cherry mead gives the opening a tart, honeyed sweetness. Star anise and cardamom sharpen it, while frankincense adds a resinous edge. The heart turns darker with juniper, clove, orris, myrrh and damson, where resinous needles and hot clove meet powdery orris and the deep plum tone of damson.
Tobacco absolute anchors the base. Seaweed, oakwood and ambergris bring brine and waterlogged timber, while guaiacwood, birch, oakmoss, cedarwood, vetiver, labdanum, gurjun and cypriol add smoke, moss and resin in layers. The tobacco stays sweet and warm, but it carries the sea inside it.
