About Wessel-Jan Kos

A Dutch perfumer and Master Perfumer at DSM-Firmenich. He dreamed of becoming a perfumer from the age of five, later studying chemistry before pursuing specialist training in perfumery.

Career

After studying chemistry in Amsterdam, he trained at the ISIPCA perfumery school in Versailles. Joining Firmenich, he worked internationally across the USA, Switzerland, Germany, Dubai, and England, earning the title of Master Perfumer in 2022. The Kos family has worked in fragrance across four generations; he belongs to the third, with his own career centered on composition and work within the fragrance industry.

Creative Style & Philosophy

His fragrances range from close observations of a plant material to compositions about a landscape or a particular moment in the year. In his cedarwood work, the dry smell of pencil shavings becomes a familiar point of reference. In Jour 21, a summer-solstice setting comes through orange, jasmine, saffron and warm amber. Velvet Splendour takes another direction through the impression of flowering mimosa. These different subjects show how recognizable materials can give a fragrance a setting and character.

Signature Works

  • *Velvet Splendour* — a radiant, sensual chypre built around Australian mimosa.
  • *Jour 21* — a warm amber celebrating the summer solstice with orange and jasmine.
  • *29 Legno di Cedro* — a nostalgic cedarwood evoking pencil shavings.
