About Mathilde Laurent

Mathilde Laurent is one of France's most celebrated perfumers. Born in 1970 in Neuilly-sur-Seine and raised in the Montparnasse neighborhood of Paris, she grew up in an artistic family. From a young age, she experienced the world through her nose, a trait that would define her career. After earning a scientific DEUG, she studied perfumery at ISIPCA in Versailles, graduating in 1992.

Career

At Guerlain, Laurent spent 11 years under the tutelage of Jean-Paul Guerlain, creating notable fragrances such as Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune, Guet-Apens, and Shalimar Eau Légère. In 2005, she moved to Cartier, becoming the maison's first dedicated in-house perfumer. Since then, she has created over 30 fragrances for Cartier, including Baiser Volé, La Panthère, and L'Envol.

Creative Style & Philosophy

Laurent's creative style is characterized by simplicity and boldness. She favors short, simple formulas with relatively few ingredients, yet achieves a wide range of nuances. She believes that "you don't need crazy inspiration to create crazy, incredible beauty; it's important to have simple and obvious ideas, and then show them with the greatest beauty." She challenges gender norms in perfumery and reinterprets forgotten notes. In 2015, she created L'Heure Perdue using exclusively lab-created molecules, pushing the boundaries of traditional perfumery.

Signature Works

• *Baiser Volé (Cartier, 2011)* — A lily study divided into leaf, petal, and stamen facets, bringing freshness, floral volume, and a powdery trail into a single bloom.
• *La Panthère (Cartier, 2014)* — A modern floral chypre that sets luminous gardenia against animalic musk and mossy shadow, joining flower and feline symbolism in one structure.
• *L'Envol (Cartier, 2016)* — A light honeyed-musk effect carried by an airy woody frame, designed to suggest lift and suspension without heaviness.
