Jean-Michel Duriez is a French Master Perfumer who moves between rigor and instinct, classicism and personal narrative. He describes perfume not as a fixed object but as fluid emotion reaching people in waves over time.
Career
Born in Amiens in 1961, Duriez mixed mint and rose petals from the family garden and carried a small case of scents as a child. He entered ISIP in 1983, then continued a more creation-focused education at Roure in Grasse. His first position came at E.D.O. in 1986, followed by Kao and, from 1997, work as house perfumer for historic maisons, where he managed creation as well as sourcing, manufacturing quality, and olfactory heritage. He later developed an eponymous venture and independent atelier.
Creative Style & Philosophy
He values excellent materials at the concentration needed to make the whole formula stand as architecture. Smoke, humidity, dry wood, florals, and tastes are converted into temperature and movement rather than copied literally. Long experience as a house perfumer supports precise collaboration, translating a director's language into wearable structure without erasing its intent.
