Christine Nagel leads olfactory creation and fragrance heritage at Hermès. Swiss discipline, Italian luminosity, and a researcher's power of observation come together in her practice, where scent is constructed almost as a material that can be touched.

Career

Born in Geneva, Nagel studied organic chemistry at the city's university. In Firmenich's research department, she used chromatography to analyze fragrance materials down to the molecular level. She later established an analytical department at Créations Aromatiques and learned composition with Michel Almairac. After experience at several fragrance houses, she joined Hermès in 2014 and in 2016 succeeded Jean-Claude Ellena as head of creation and olfactory heritage.

Creative Style & Philosophy

As colors become more vivid through opposition, she places materials of different character against one another so each gains definition. The suppleness of leather, fullness of flowers, moisture of fruit, and dryness of wood are handled as tactile properties, with details repeatedly made and unmade. Heritage is not left as quotation; it is translated into the present sensation of material meeting the body.
