About Calice Becker
Calice Becker is a Givaudan VP Perfumer and Director of its Perfumery School. She brings an artist's sensitivity to a scientific state of mind, treating creation and education as two parts of the same practice.
Career
Initially drawn to medicine and then mathematics and science, Becker entered Roure after an interview and began training at its Grasse perfumery school in 1985. She learned with mentors including Dominique Ropion and Françoise Caron and built experience in Paris and New York. She joined Givaudan as VP Perfumer in 2007, became Director of the Perfumery School in 2017, and received The Fragrance Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Perfumer Award in 2021.
Creative Style & Philosophy
Even when an idea is powerful or unexpected, she values a harmonious movement from one note to the next without harsh edges. Music, painting, sculpture, and food offer models of creative process, while science and digital tools remain means for realizing imagination. As an educator she teaches metacognition: perception must be questioned in relation to what was smelled before, the environment, and the state of the observer.
