About Safranal

Safranal is a fragrance molecule used to create an impression of saffron. Alongside its warmer spice character, it has drier associations with herbs and tobacco, as well as quieter floral detail. It is distinct from the botanical material saffron and from a saffron extract. Commercial perfumery materials include synthetically produced Safranal, allowing the saffron-like direction to be used as part of a composed fragrance rather than relying only on an extract of the spice.

Scent Profile

**Warm spice meets the drier texture of herbs and tobacco.** A cut-hay impression can sit alongside softer floral undertones, giving the material several directions beyond sweetness alone. The relationship between the drier and gentler facets offers finer detail within its warmth. These qualities make it a useful connection to spices, wood and more powdery flowers, rather than placing its character mainly around the juicier brightness of fruit.

Use in Perfumery

Safranal is used in compositions centred on spice, herbs, tobacco, orris and wood. It can form part of a saffron accord or bring additional spice to amber and leather settings. Pairing it with rose can place a drier warmth around the flowers, while sandalwood can provide a smoother contrast to its more defined spice character. Orris offers another connection through its powdery texture, allowing the drier herbal and tobacco impressions to sit between flowers and wood.
