What Is Methyl Laitone?

Methyl Laitone is a synthetic aroma ingredient from Givaudan, one of the spiro-lactones the company developed and patented. Givaudan describes Methyl Laitone as extremely powerful.

Scent Profile

Its family is fruity, with coconut-milk, lactonic and creamy facets. Givaudan says it is very effective in any accord that needs creamy, fruity volume. Rather than a sharp fruit note, the effect Givaudan highlights is softness and body.

Use in Perfumery

In Givaudan's description, Methyl Laitone gives cosmetic body to white flowers such as jasmine, gardenia, tuberose and ylang-ylang, and supports fruity accords like peach and osmanthus. It adds milkiness to sandalwood accords and combines nicely with coumarin and tonka notes. One published example is SOLÆR, whose official description presents a scent containing Methyl Laitone that suggests coconut and fig and recalls sunscreen. The coconut impression matches the coconut-milk facet Givaudan lists, while the fig and sunscreen associations come from SOLÆR's own description.
