Civettone is a synthetic aroma chemical that replicates the key odorant component of natural civet. Due to ethical and supply concerns, natural civet is rarely used, and civettone serves as a widely accepted substitute. It possesses a warm, musky character with subtle animalic and fatty nuances, along with a faint floral facet, providing depth and longevity to perfumes.

Scent Profile

The scent of civettone is based on a soft, powdery musk texture, with a warm animalic quality and a slight sweetness. On its own, it is understated, but when blended with other materials, it adds a sensual depth to oriental, chypre, and floral compositions. It is barely perceptible in the top notes, revealing its presence from the middle to the base.

Use in Perfumery

Civettone is primarily used as a base note, imparting tenacity and richness to perfumes. Typical usage levels range from 0.1% to 1%, with higher concentrations intensifying the animalic facet. It blends well with floral bouquets, amber, woody, and leather accords, and is particularly effective in feminine oriental fragrances. As a substitute for natural civet, it also supports cruelty-free perfumery.
