Perfumer, House and Creative Background

Its perfumer is Mathilde Laurent. She studied at ISIPCA, worked at Guerlain, and began creating fragrances at Cartier in 2005.

Laurent recalls asking Jean-Paul Guerlain for an internship herself, then spending eleven years at the house. Seeking an opportunity to learn became the beginning of a long working relationship.

At Cartier, she says, discussion of the bottle, packaging, story and presentation in store comes before composition. Rather than competing finished proposals, she develops one fragrance suited to the project. Scent and bottle belong to a single work.

In an interview about the oud collection, she recalled an experience from her early days at Cartier. A colleague handling special high-jewellery orders, with many Middle Eastern clients, burned real oud in his office for her. She remembered the smell vividly.

The encounter passed from a colleague working with jewellery clients to a perfumer. What makes it memorable is that she encountered oud as burning wood, beyond its presence in a bottled fragrance.

In another interview, Laurent said she had not wanted to make an oud perfume simply to follow a fashion. She liked oud itself and spoke of respecting the material and the local fragrance culture she encountered in Dubai. An interest in its actual smell lies behind the collection.
